Mauka To Makai Leatherworks

William Henry Dumlao, owner and artist of Mauka To Makai Leatherworks, was born and raised on Oʻahu. He is a family man, with his wife Janel of 37 years, 5 beautiful daughters, a granddaughter and two grandsons.

William has a long history in the construction industry, eventually as a mason. A back injury in 1996 led him to switch careers, working as a truck driver, welder, and quality inspector, while continuing to practice masonry.

After relocating back and forth between Maui and O'ahu, he pursued his interest in leathercraft during a period of recovery from back surgery. Self-taught through online resources, he credits much of his skill to Don Gonzales of DG Saddlery, whose tutorials and podcast were invaluable.

William's passion for leathercraft continues to grow, driven by his desire to create custom, one-of-a-kind products that can last for generations. His work is deeply influenced by the traditions of Western craftsmanship, and he is honored to help preserve these “lost trades.” Supported by his wife, daughters, and family, William finds joy in the reactions of those who receive his handmade pieces
